Large heavy breasts that are not proportionate to the body can cause pain to the back, neck and shoulders. They can be disruptive during physical activities such as exercise.
Many women prefer a smaller cup size because of this, which also makes it easier to find well-fitted clothing. A breast reduction, also called a reduction mammoplasty, will make the breasts smaller and has a lifting effect. It will give nice and firm breasts that better fit the body.
Causes large breasts
Large breasts are partly hereditary, but hormones play a role as well. The anti conception pill, for example, is prescribed at a young age. Breasts are comprised partly out of fat tissue and weight increase will cause larger breasts as well. Because we’ve become heavier the past few years, the number of breast reductions has increased.
Personal consultation
During the consultation you’ll discuss with plastic surgeon Kazem which cup size you think best fits with your body and whether or not you want the areola, the area around the nipples, reduced.
He’ll see what the best method is for you to reduce the breast size, the place of the scars and what you should expect as an end result. Finally, plastic surgeon Kazem will tell you everything about the procedure itself, the anesthesia, the recovery, the aftercare, the risks, and he’ll answer all your questions. Result breast reduction
The result is visible immediately after the surgery, and because the breasts aren’t as heavy there should be a fast relief of neck and shoulder pain. Excess skin will be removed, besides breast tissue, which lifts the breasts. Smaller and firmer breasts will also make you look thinner and younger. Many women are also happy to find that clothing fits better around the torso after a few weeks. Depending on the severity of the procedure and the amount of breast tissue that’s been removed, it will take some time before the breasts take their definitive form.
Breast reduction, the surgery
The breast reduction, also called a reduction mammoplasty, will take place under full anesthesia. The procedure lasts, on average, for two to three hours. There are different surgical methods to reduce the breasts. The chosen method depends on the size of the breasts and the amount of glandular tissue, fat tissue and skin that will be removed.
This short animated movie shows the different surgical techniques such as the anchor method and the keyhole method, which are named after the shape of the scars. The glandular tissue, fat tissue and excess skin are usually removed at the bottom. The nipple will be moved up to the right position and usually the areola is reduced a little as well. After that the skin is stitched with soluble stitches.
Recovery breast reduction
Usually you can go home the same day. After the procedure the breasts will be sensitive and swollen, but this reduces by itself over time. During the first week after the surgery you’ll have to take it easy. After that you can pick up most daily activities again. For a speedy recovery of the breast tissue and the scars, we recommend not to do any intensive physical exercise for the next six weeks.
Scar breast reduction
Visible scars are not preventable with a breast reduction. The type of scar, vertical or anchor shaped, depends on the shape and size of the breasts and the experience of the plastic surgeon. Right after the surgery the scars will be red but they’ll gradually become lighter when they settle. Scars heal better and become more supple with a special scar cream.
Always protect scar tissue against the sun, especially the first 6 months after the surgery, to prevent discoloration.
Aftercare Kazem in the long term
Good aftercare is important to us at Kazem Aesthetica, immediately after the surgery and in the long term.
After the surgery the plastic surgeon, Farid Kazem, will check up on you to see how you’re feeling and will discuss the surgery and give advice about scar care. The day after the surgery, doctor Kazem will personally contact you to see how you’re doing. The first checkup is a week after the surgery. If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, you can reach Kazem Aesthetica 24 hours per day.
Risks
When a breast reduction is carried out by an expert plastic surgeon, the chance of complications is minimal. Scars will sometimes heal less fast or will remain more clearly visible. When the position of the nipples drastically changes they can remain less sensitive and there is a small chance that you will no longer be able to breastfeed. Plastic surgeon Kazem will discuss the potential risks extensively during the consultation.
Find the right plastic surgeon
A breast reduction always starts with a consultation by the plastic surgeon that will carry out the procedure. If you decide to go for a breast reduction it’s important that you have clear and objective information, only when you’re well informed about the benefits and drawbacks of the procedure can you make a decision. A beautiful and natural end result is strongly dependent on the expertise and the esthetical insight of the plastic surgeon. Always chose a plastic surgeon that has done a lot of breast reductions and that’s a member of the NVPC (Dutch Association for Plastic Surgeons).
