What is CoolSculpting by Zeltiq
CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is the treatment to remove love handles exactly where you want them to be. Cryolipolyse is the technology that’s used to definitely remove the fat cells from the body through precise cooling. The cold activates the natural process where fat cells start dying off (apoptosis). The fat cells will gradually leave the body. After 2-4 months you’ll see the result, 1 to 2 centimeters in size reduction. That saves you about a clothing size.
How does CoolSculpting by Zeltiq work?
During the CoolSculpting treatment a special applicator cools the fat cells exactly there where you’d like to see the love handle disappear. It’s a gradual process where cells disappear little by little. With the gradual disappearance of the fat cells the fat layer is gradually reduced as well after 2 to 4 months.
Is CoolSculpting a new way to lose lots of weight at once?
CoolSculpting was developed to improve the contours of your body. This treatment is not suitable to lose lots of weight at once or to treat, for example, obesity. CoolSculpting is meant for relatively healthy and fit people that get enough exercise and eat healthy. People that have local love handles that won’t go away with a diet, exercise or extra movement.
How do I know if CoolSculpting is for me?
The best results are achieved by people with a BMI (Body Mass Index) under 30. It is noted that the BMI is only an indication. At the end, during the consultation with plastic surgeon Farid Kazem, it’ll be decided whether CoolSculpting is a suitable method for you.
Does CoolSculpting by Zeltiq really work?
Yes, CoolSculpting has an FDA approval to show that. That means that independent scientific research has provided proof that the method delivers the results it says it does: the definitive removal of fat cells without surgery, without injections, without anesthetics and without a long recovery period. In the treated areas on average, 20% of the fat cells will disappear after just one CoolSculpting treatment.
When will I see the results?
A noticeable natural fat reduction in the treated zones will be most visible about 2-4 months after the treatment. Someone with a BMI of 30 or less will see their size reduced by an average of 1 to 2 centimeters after just one treatment. Doctor Kazem has treated a large amount of people since November 2009. First the clients notice that their clothing is much roomier, it often means a loss of an entire clothing size. Important is that these results are now scientifically proven and the FDA has approved the treatment with the CoolSculpting machine.
How long do the results last?
CoolSculpting is a new technique. The removal of the fat cells is permanent. The expectation is that the results of the CoolSculpting treatment last as long as a technique such as liposuction. For a long term result it’s important to maintain a good weight. Stopping exercise, moving less and other unhealthy nutrition patterns can change your figure again, of course.
Is CoolSculpting by Zeltiq a safe treatment?
Yes, especially with all the advertising and promises from beauty institutes, it’s important that a government agency such as the FDA judges a treatment as safe and effective. The FDA will only approve treatments after independently published clinical research is published. CoolSculpting by Zeltiq has received FDA approval because it’s a safe treatment, with as a result the definitive removal of fat cells without surgery, without injections, without anesthesia and without a long recovery period. CoolSculpting by Zeltiq has also received the European CE mark which is a requirements for the European markt but not a guarantee for safety or effectiveness.
What about the other imitation Cryolipolyse treatments?
What’s good to know is that the FDA approval and the scientific evidence is only applicable to CoolSculpting by Zeltiq. That’s because the Zeltiq machine has been developed at Harvard and used to prove the Cryolipolyse method. The imitation machines that claim to offer cryolipolyse can’t prove to be effective with independent scientific publications. There’s no evidence that their treatment provides any results or is even safe. Want to know more about this?
Is CoolSculpting a replacement for liposuction?
No, liposuction is a method to remove fat all at once. CoolSculpting is a good alternative to remove smaller, local fat deposits, without the risks and long recovery period from surgical procedures such as liposuction or a tummy tuck.
How long does the treatment take?
That is dependent on the treated zone. For the stomach, for example, a larger applicator has been developed that can do a larger surface area at once. The Zeltiq procedure for the stomach therefore only takes one hour. Love handles will have to be removed one side at a time. That treatment takes, on average, 1 hour.
Is the treatment painless?
CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is nearly painless and anesthesia is not necessary. At the beginning you can feel an intense cold. The treatment is so relaxed that you can even read a book or work on your laptop while it’s happening. There’s no recovery period like there would be after a surgery. Normal daily activities can be done again right after the treatment.
What are the effects after the treatment?
Sometimes there may be bruising or a tender feeling, but this disappears by itself. There may also be less sensitivity in the treated area for several weeks. Just like any other treatment, every body responds differently. Very rarely a stabbing pain can happen during the treatment of the stomach. A painkiller such as Ibuprofen is often enough and eventually the pain will disappear. Pain complaints have no influence on the result. Plastic surgeon Kazem advices to contact him for advice about any pain, and to discuss these during the consultation.
What happens to the fat cells?
The fat cells are broken down by the body and disposed of naturally, through the liver and the kidneys, the same way it happens with fat from our food.
Is Cryolipolyse harmful to the liver?
The removal of the fat cells is a gradual process and that makes it unlikely the liver will be overloaded. It is important to note the following: it’s discouraged for anyone who isn’t healthy to have a cosmetic treatment done. Whether it’s Botox, CoolSculpting or a procedure done under anesthesia.
CoolSculpting by Zeltiq or Cryolipolyse?
It seems a little confusing that the name Cryolipolysis and CoolSculpting by Zeltiq are used side by side. Dermatologists from Harvard discovered that fat cells die at a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, while nerves and tissue surrounding it remain untouched. Cryolipolyse is the name of the process where fat cells die off through cooling and leave the body naturally. Together with the company, Zeltiq, they developed the machine that cools and eliminates the fat cells.
This same machine was used by independent research to prove that the treatment is safe and effective.
Zeltiq owns the patents on Cryolipolyse and has the sole right to apply these techniques. At first the brand new treatment was called the Zeltiq procedure or Cryolipolyse. Later the name was changed to CoolSculpting by Zeltiq, or CoolSculpting for short.
