CoolSculpting explained in six steps
CoolSculpting is a (maybe even THE) method to get rid of that final love handle that just doesn’t go away with a strong ‘good intentions’ diet or exercising every day. Curious? Plastic surgeon Farid Kazem explains in six steps how it works.
#1: What is CoolSculpting?
“Coolsculpting removes love handles by cooling fat cells to a precise temperature. Fat cells can’t stand the cold which causes them to crystalize (freeze). Subsequently the fat cells fall apart gradually and exit the body through a natural way.”
#2: Is it suitable for everyone?
“It’s suitable for people that have love handles where a diet or additional exercise gives very little result. It is, however, not a way to lose weight. Because fat cells gradually leave the body, the skin will remain smooth and gets the chance to adjust to the new contours. This is a large difference compared to liposuction where a large amount of fat is removed at once and the skin can become weak.”
#3: On which parts can CoolSculpting be applied?
“Exactly there where you need the stubborn love handles to disappear: the stomach, arms, inside of the legs, thighs, back, knees and even the chin.”
#4: How do you prevent over-expecting?
“It’s very important to set realistic expectations in regards to the end result during the consultation. It’s a treatment that streamlines and improves the contours, but not a way to lose weight. And even when, for example, a bit of stomach or love handles on the legs disappear, CoolSculpting does not change you in a toned and slim supermodel. Good 3D photos help you see the difference after the treatment.”
#5: Do fat cells shrink or do they really disappear?
“The fat cells in the treated area leave the body for good and won’t return. It’s important to remain at a stable weight. The fact that you can’t store fat in the treated love handles doesn’t mean your body can’t store fat in untreated areas on the hips for example. The big difference with dieting and exercise is that with CoolSculpting the fat cells disappear forever, with diet and exercise the number of fat cells remains the same. They only reduce in size. As soon as you exercise less or fail the diet the fat cells enlarge again.”
#6: When can CoolSculpting not be applied?
“The treatment is not done to people that are extremely sensitive to cold, such as those suffering from Raynaud’s disease. It’s also not suitable for treating obesity. CoolSculpting is a medical treatment and can only be done under the supervision of a qualified physician.”
